Mac security often gets a reputation for being inherently safer than other platforms, and while macOS does have strong built-in protections, that reputation has led some Mac owners to skip security steps they’d never skip on a different platform. Real Mac security comes from actually using the protections Apple provides, not from assuming the operating system alone is enough.

FileVault is the cornerstone of Mac security and encrypts your entire startup disk, meaning that even if your Mac is lost, stolen, or its drive is physically removed, the data remains unreadable without your password. It’s not always enabled by default and is worth verifying is active, since an unencrypted drive means anyone with physical access to it can potentially read your files directly. Gatekeeper controls which applications are allowed to run based on developer signatures, blocking a large share of malicious software before it ever executes, though it depends on not dismissing security warnings without reading them.

Password and account security matters just as much on Mac as anywhere else. A strong Mac login password (not just a simple passcode), combined with a properly configured Apple ID protected by two-factor authentication, closes off two of the most common ways a Mac gets compromised. We also recommend reviewing System Settings for privacy permissions — which apps have access to your camera, microphone, location, and files — since macOS asks for these permissions but doesn’t always make it obvious afterward which apps you’ve granted broad access to.

Network security is another area worth attention: the built-in firewall in macOS is often left off by default, and enabling it adds a meaningful layer of protection, particularly on networks you don’t fully control, like public Wi-Fi.
