Stolen Device Protection is one of the more meaningful security additions Apple has made to iOS in recent years, closing a real gap that existed for a long time: someone who watched you enter your passcode and then stole your unlocked or soon-to-be-unlocked iPhone previously had a fairly easy path to locking you out of your own Apple ID.

Certain sensitive actions, like changing your Apple ID password, turning off Find My, or adding a new Face ID, now require Face ID or Touch ID authentication even if the correct passcode is entered, closing off the passcode-only path an attacker could previously exploit. For an additional set of especially sensitive actions performed away from familiar locations like home or work, the feature adds a one-hour security delay along with a second biometric confirmation, giving you a window to notice and respond if your phone was actually stolen.
