Two-Factor Authentication, often called 2FA, adds a second layer of verification beyond just a password when logging into an account, and it’s one of the single most effective security measures available to regular users. Even a strong, unique password can be compromised through a data breach, phishing attempt, or malware — 2FA means that a stolen password alone usually isn’t enough for an attacker to actually get into your account, because they’d also need access to your second verification method.

The most common forms of two-factor authentication include a code sent via text message, a code generated by an authenticator app like Google Authenticator or Authy, a physical security key that plugs into a device or connects wirelessly, and push notifications sent to a trusted device asking you to approve or deny a login attempt. Each method offers different tradeoffs between convenience and security: text message codes are the easiest to set up but slightly less secure since phone numbers can occasionally be hijacked through a technique called SIM swapping, while authenticator apps and physical security keys offer stronger protection since they’re not tied to your phone number at all.

Setting up two-factor authentication matters most on accounts that would cause the most damage if compromised: your primary email account (since email is often used to reset passwords on other accounts), banking and financial accounts, your Apple ID or Google account (since these are tied to backups, purchases, and often other connected services), and any account containing sensitive personal or financial information. Once email and financial accounts are protected, extending 2FA to social media and other accounts adds further protection with minimal ongoing inconvenience.

We help customers set up two-factor authentication across their most important accounts, choose an appropriate method based on their comfort level with the setup process, and importantly, help set up and safely store backup codes in case a phone is lost or an authenticator app becomes inaccessible — a common oversight that can lock people out of their own accounts if not planned for ahead of time.
